Assert yourself as leader
Now that your head is filled with the fancy book learnin’ lets move on to some practical advice. When I would teach leadership the first thing new leaders would be taught is my crash course to leadership. The crash course was designed to address common mistakes people make over and over again. The notes are designed more for a military style group and will be modified to fit the Airsoft world.
Assert yourself as leader.
In the military world this is done by many different ways which don’t translate well in the “Fun Airsoft I’m here for a good time” structure. However, there are some steps you will take to inform new people who is the boss. First wear a rank. Just like the military a rank is the easiest way to show who is what in the organization. You don’t need to wear chevrons / stripes, you could use the location of a team patch as a indicator. top of shoulder is team leader, lower placement for lesser “rank”, or any other indicator. Second. When new people arrive tell them your in charge. “hi my name is [insert name] [Airsoft Club name]leader” also don’t forget to introduce your sub commanders, including their names and position within the group. Lets the new guy know who is who in the zoo.
Airsoft edit 1. Remember as team leader you have a 50.0000001% dictatorship. You should not only be talking but listening also. Its not a democracy, but your not the supreme ruler either. If time allows listen to your sub commanders and teammates input and make a decision. It has to be clear, once you make the decision that is the path the team is taking right or wrong.
Airsoft edit 2. First let me say,NO fucking co-captains. If your Airsoft Club has this command structure someone needs to step down on the field. This is so there is some consistency in team organization and rules. Give the past co-captain an important position or duty in the organization. Ideally you keep this organization permanent, However I understand this is airsoft and not the real world and that egos will get hurt. If you must, people can take turns as leader on the field. Make one person team captain, the other second in command its either / or, not two captains at the same time, one leads the other follows.
