Airsoft team Leadership and Organization, day 9
Your not perfect and do not know everything, know your faults
Remember to listen to your sub-commanders and be prepared to let them take over.
Example one. Your group has won free tickets for scuba diving lessons anywhere in the area with any dive company you wish. You have never been scuba diving in your life however the newest team mate is an avid diver. What you can do is delegate him to organize the trip and take charge of everything. You sit back and watch everything happen and act as an advisory capacity. They are the material subject expert, not you, use their experience.
Example two. More Airsoft related. Your team has come across an “enemy” team on your left. Half of the section including the squad 2i/c can see everything but your vision is impaired by an obstacle. Your squad 2 i/c is telling you to get to the top of the obstacle and shoot to the right, a complete different direction then where the known “enemy” is. What do you do? This starts to get into another topic called situational awareness. Your 2i/c knows exactly what is going on, you in this situation know very little. The correct course of action is to get into a proper location to see exactly what is going on and make a decision, but that takes time. If you value your teammates judgement the smart thing to do would be follow your sub-commanders direction.
Know your faults.
By knowing in which areas you are less than perfect in you can make a course of action for improvement. The other option is to work around the fault. Time management is a skill many people fail at and the work around is simple.
Make estimates on how long a task will take, complete the task and you will soon discover that you are either over or underestimating the time required. Once you discover by how much you are off with your “gut estimate” the improvement is simple. If you are constantly estimating a task taking one hour and in reality it takes four, multiple your “gut estimate” by four every time. If you estimate a task taking 10 hours and in reality it takes 5, remember to half your “gut estimate”.
Knowing which tasks you do well at and which need improving will help you as a leader of your Airsoft club
